Teaching based on inquiry

Teaching based on inquiry stresses out the emphasis of students being the centre of the teaching-learning process with teachers as facilitators. This could be done with several strategies such as think-pair-share or solve problems, have a forum, panel discussion and not be passive listeners. inquiry improves student participation, helps them master the content and enhance their skills. It also helps to make the classroom experiences relevant and bring out their best. Teacher also gain deeper understanding of the students and not just be information givers.

Here is a sample of how I would use the inquiry cycle in my classes for teaching math. This example is from grade 8 math class for teaching pi. I gave this to them without telling anything about pi or how it is related to math. This follows the Kipling method (Markov, 2022) of asking questions.

Inquiry

Use 5W and 1H way to write 6 questions on investigating ‘pi’. Work in groups and investigate the answers to these questions using websites. Have a discussion with your peers on what you are discovering and come to an understanding.

Action

Write a paper on your findings and email it to me for review within 2 days. Review the work using the rubric given to you before sending the paper.

Reflection

Work alone and write in your journal what you learnt through the exercise. How effective was the 5W1H method to think? What was your peer work like? What have you learnt at the end of this exercise and what do you think you could have learnt.

I always find that kids learn best when inquiry is connected with group work and ends with individual reflections. The excitement of being with friends tapers off and one can reflect by oneself.
