Instruction. Training. Teaching. Education

Define each of the four terms independently:

Instruction design is about finding the best ways to provide knowledge and skills to the students in schools or adult life (Montes, 2013).

Instruction is nothing but an intentional facilitation of learning towards identified learning goals (Montes, 2013). The keywords here are (a) intention, (b) learning goals, (c) facilitation and (d) identification of goals.

In that way one can say that Training is also instruction for it entails experiences focused on acquiring specific skills with the need for immediate application (Montes, 2013). Instruction may not focus on immediate application whereas training would.

Teaching on the contrary always includes experiences facilitated by an actual teacher for support. Teaching and training may overlap but as teaching can happen within or without focused identified goals (Montes, 2013), they intersect as sets but have their separate components also.

Education is the overarching set including all the others. For education (a) can be formal or informal, (b) can use a teacher or not use a teacher, (c) can have immediate applications or may not have and (d) can be disseminated by a teacher or digitally. Education is a broad term, and all the others are a part of education is the super set (Montes, 2013).

When I teach a group of learners where I lend my own emotional and cognitive support too, I am into teaching. However, this may or may not have immediate goals, such as teaching a concept for an exam at the end of the year. If the dissemination is focused on specific skills and does not require a lot of support, such as for adults, I am in the range of training. For example, training a group of teachers towards collaborative learning in the class. Both are components of instruction but for me teaching is special for then I lend myself into the process. It is less transactory.

For example, if a child may not be able to learn I would help with extra time or attention but for training an adult I would expect him or her to take responsibility. Education is the overall encompassing set for all of these and helps to keep me detached. For education is lifelong and can be disseminated with or without a teacher or digital intervention. For example, watching a video with a group of friends, I learn from the comments of my friends although they are not intending for the same. Hence education ‘happens’ even though there may not be an intention for the same.
